(Yes, you can read these on you iPod Touch (and iPhone, iPad and Blackberry)

I've got a ton of free Kindle books already, but I check every day to see if there are new ones I might be interested in. I've got this link bookmarked: Amazon's Top 100 Free Kindle eBooksLaura Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764499144427502963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-452663198025981163.post-58477794236852952442010-03-18T10:45:00.000-07:002010-04-03T10:36:05.925-07:00I Caved and got an Ipod TouchOK... I caved. Hubby asked what I wanted for my birthday and I told him.... the Ipod Touch! I can hear you now... "At first you were in love with your eBookwise. Then you got a Dell Axim X30 and absolutely loved it. Now that wasn't good enough for you? You had to have an iPod Touch as well?"

Let me explain like I did for hubby ;) I absolutely DO love my Dell Axim! But I have to admit, when I was shopping for it... I did fall head over heels for the iPod Touch. I just couldn't afford the Touch. I was able to get the Dell Axim X30 at a great price on Ebay: Axim X30 on eBay here

However, the Axim does have its limitations. Because it is no longer being manufactured, there are practically no 3rd party software development (applications). Yes, I have my Mobipocket reader on my Dell, my photos, some music. But what I really wanted was to listen to either Pandora Radio or Slacker Radio on it. It's not there and it's just not going to happen. So I caved and asked for an Ipod Touch.

Am I giving up my Dell? NO!!!! What I like about the Dell that is not in the iPod are a swappable battery (I have 2 batteries) and media cards. So I'm keeping my Dell. If my iPod dies, or just the battery dies, I NEED to be able to read!! (Although I'll be giving my eBookwise to my Mom! Shhh, don't tell her! It's going to be a surprise!)

Of course though, I've already added Amazon's free Kindle app to my new iPod Touch!
Laura Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764499144427502963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-452663198025981163.post-28309586797567285912010-01-12T07:54:00.000-08:002010-01-12T08:13:07.925-08:00Free eBooksDid you know that Amazon.com frequently offers their Kindle books for FREE?

Many of these books eventually go to their regular price - some more quickly than others.

I've gotten many Kindle books for free that are now full price. A bit later, someone out there had a script written so that you can read most Kindle books with Mobipocket Reader! They can also then be converted to most any other format, but since I have Mobipocket Reader on my Dell Axim X30, there was no need for me to change formats.

I am absolutely THRILLED!!! I often receive Amazon.com gift cards as gifts or as points rewards. Now I can actually purchase Kindle books and read them on the ereader of my choice. Although the Kindle is very nice, I prefer a much smaller unit like the Dell Axim that I can easily fit in my purse. Heck, I'll probably end up spending more than just the gift cards now....

You can find the info on how to do this HERE.

There are some exceptions... if the Kindle book is in "topaz" format, then it cannot be converted. Before purchasing a Kindle book, simply download the free preview first. If you can convert the preview, then you will be able to convert the full book. If the sample will not convert - then neither will the full book. You can still, however, read it on your PC if you don't mind doing that.Laura Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764499144427502963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-452663198025981163.post-59439747628707107362009-10-09T06:18:00.000-07:002009-10-09T06:24:27.678-07:00Great Inexpensive Mystery for Dell Axim X30 & EbookwiseI always love a good deal!! I was looking for an inexpensive mystery ebook to read on my Dell Axim X30. Identity Crisis by Debbi Mack was fabulous! At $1.25 you can't beat the price :)

I love Sue Grafton mysteries, and when I read that Identity Crisis featured a woman, I decided to take a chance. I'm so glad I did! I'm looking forward to Debbi Mack's next book.

This ebook is available in several formats. For the Dell Axim - use the .mobi download. For the Ebookwise, I used the Plain Text Download - and then put it on my Ebookwise with my personal content server.
Laura Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764499144427502963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-452663198025981163.post-2459431292099266852009-09-22T15:38:00.000-07:002009-09-22T16:15:16.785-07:00Sue Grafton P is for Peril ebookI grew up on mysteries - Nancy Drew to be precise. It is not surprising then that I prefer mysteries to any other type of book.

I love Sue Grafton's ABC series, and in paperback had read "A is for Alibi" thru "O is for Outlaw". Now that I prefer reading on an ereader to paperbacks, I started looking for ebooks of the Sue Grafton's series. P is for Peril was next on my list, but all the ebook versions were $23.95 or higher. Sorry, but I'm not paying that price for an electronic book - especially when it is not the most current book in the series!

I had read some reviews on Amazon, (they were not good) and decided I wasn't going to miss that book.

But I was browsing on Fictionwise (I had this book on my Wish List) and saw that the price had been reduced to $7.99, like the other books in the series. I was willing to give it a chance for $8!

I enjoyed the book very much. For the most part it was typical Sue Grafton writing. The ending is what most people did not care for (hence the bad reviews). Some couldn't figure the ending out, however I was able to easily. It was not a typical Sue Grafton ending, but not bad. I'd give the book 4 stars out of 5. I wouldn't want all of her books to have that kind of ending, but I'm glad I read this book!
Laura Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764499144427502963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-452663198025981163.post-79672563232054259512009-09-11T09:10:00.000-07:002009-09-11T09:28:17.105-07:00Using the Dell Axim X30 as an eReaderAlthough I love my eBookwise, I now read almost exclusively on my used Dell Axim X30. I can easily take it anywhere so I can read my current book when I'm out and about (instead of reading 2 books.. one at home and one for errands) and I like the display better than the eBookwise reader.

Here's a list of what I like about the Dell Axim X30

* It's about 5" x 3" and fits into my small purse easily.
* I got the model with wifi so I can download books to it just like a Kindle.
* It's also an LCD touchscreen but the screen is MUCH better than the ebookwise. It's NOT dot matrix (the ebookwise is).
* I use Mobipocket (mine was not preloaded with MS Reader and I didn't have the CD - so I can't sync to my PC which is needed to load MS Reader onto my Axim.)
* You can change the font color, back ground color and of course font size. I have my size at larger than typical paperback font size.
* It has user replaceable batteries - so I can always have a spare charged up ready to go.
* It uses easy to find SD cards
* It's NOT a phone - so I don't have to pay monthly fees for 3G access (I am very frugal) I like the wifi, but am not willing to pay for that type of access all the time as you would with a phone with 3G. (we have wifi at home)

The Dell Axim X50 is the current version, but you can find X30's on eBay for $50-$100. (be sure to get the model that has Wifi!!)

Laura Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764499144427502963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-452663198025981163.post-28193299092791395012009-04-12T16:30:00.000-07:002009-09-11T09:09:27.511-07:00I decided upon the EBW1150 (eBookwise 1150) because it was the only reader priced around $100. All of the other eBook readers were in the $300 price range or higher.

I originally thought that my reading material was a bit limited with the eBookwise 1150. My plan was to have this for now and eventually purchase either a Sony PRS 505 or Amazon Kindle

After using my EBW1150 for a few weeks and doing even more research on the unit, I discovered that this was not the case! I no longer feel the need to purchase another eReader and will be sticking with my eBookwise.

I am no expert, but I wanted to share some tips I have learned for enjoying your EBW1150.Laura Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764499144427502963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-452663198025981163.post-30840672559706518322009-04-11T07:06:00.000-07:002009-09-11T09:28:50.887-07:00What is an eBook? An eBook is the digital media equivalent of a conventional printed book. eBooks can be read on your computer, PDA's, iTouch, many phones such as the iPhone and also on dedicated eBook reading devices called eReaders or eBook readers.

At this time, eBooks come in many different formats. You must be sure to purchase the correct eBook format for your eReader. At first it can be a little confusing, but soon you'll get the hang of it! It's just like when VCR's first came out and there were 2 formats: VHS and BETA.Laura Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764499144427502963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-452663198025981163.post-63190168146586306302009-04-10T16:02:00.000-07:002009-09-11T09:29:09.170-07:00What is an eReader? An eReader is an electronic reading device on which you can read electronic books. Depending upon the memory of your chosen device, you can carry a couple hundred books with you in a device that weighs no more than 18 oz and with some devices as little as 9 oz.

Why should you purchase a gadget just for reading ebooks when you have your Palm, iTouch or other multi-purpose device? That is a decision for you to make.

The screen is much larger on dedicated eReaders - so it's easier to read on an eReader than on a PDA or phone. In many cases it can hold more books because it is only for reading eBooks. For me, it feels just like reading a paperback book!

My daughter told me she wasn't interested in an eReader or eBooks. She said she'd miss the feel of a "real book". She changed her mind about in about 10 seconds after reading a book on my eReader!Laura Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764499144427502963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-452663198025981163.post-48959131579006957642009-04-08T05:00:00.000-07:002009-09-11T09:29:27.864-07:00The eBookwise 1150 aka EBW 1150
As I mentioned earlier, I decided upon the EBW1150 because it was the only reader priced in the $100 range. The price is only one of the great things about this unit!

It is well built and tough (except the screen, the screens on ALL eReaders are delicate!)

The power button is on the lower right side of the unit. The "next page' button is the top left one on the front of the unit. Or go back one page with the bottom button.

The other "buttons" are on the touch screen accessed with the built in stylus.

The EBW1150 feels good to hold. It weighs about the same as a paperback book - about 18oz. The back is not just flat, there is a "bump" on the back where I think the battery may be located, but they've put a rubber coating on it so it doesn't slip out of your hands. The "bump" itself helps to make it easy to hold.

It can easily be used by right handed people or lefties! There is a button you can click to rotate the screen so the unit can be held comfortable in either hand.

The screen is back lit making it easy to read in dim light. Some people even read in bed while their spouse is sleeping! The back light does have adjustable brightness for your personal preference.

eBookwise has a great page with more information right here.
Laura Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764499144427502963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-452663198025981163.post-44944046201450329122009-04-08T04:00:00.000-07:002009-09-11T09:29:48.092-07:00Where to Buy The eBookwise 1150As mentioned earlier, I decided upon the EBW1150 (eBookwise 1150) because it was the only reader priced way under the $300 range that other readers start at.

There are 2 websites where you can purchase the EBW1150. eBookwise.com has 2 choices depending on how much memory you want.

For $109.95 you can get one with 8mb of memory. With that you can store about a dozen paperback books.

For $134.95 you can get the same unit with 64mb of memory. You can store about 100 paperback books on this unit!

Another choice is to buy the EBW1150 at www.FilamentBooks.com.

Their site states that you get a "free" ETI-2 (same as the EBW 1150) when you join their book club.

You pay low monthly payments ($19.95 for a year) and you get 2 books a month from their book club. (total $239.40) But you could get the same unit for $110 at eBookwise.com

So in reality for your $19.95 a month - you are making monthly payments to Filament Books for the unit (about $9.11a month) and paying around $10.84 a month for their book club where you get 2 ebooks a month from the club list. Still a great deal in my opinion.

For either unit you can purchase additional Smart Media cards to expand the memory up to 128mb. You can have multiple cards and store ALL of books all on your Smart Media cards!

Laura Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764499144427502963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-452663198025981163.post-63365148350723108402009-04-08T03:00:00.000-07:002009-09-11T09:30:12.264-07:00Getting eBooks onto your eBookwiseWhen you first get your EBW1150, you will need to read this page to learn how to get your eBook reader set up

When you purchase ebooks from either eBookwise or the multi-format books from Fictionwise they will show up in your "Online Bookshelf". As eBookwise is owned by Fictionwise, any books you buy at Fictionwise will show up in your eBookwise Bookshelf.

When you connect your EBW1150 to your computer via USB cord or the phone cord, all of the books you have purchased from eBookwise, Fictionwise and Filament Books will show up in your Online Bookshelf on your EBW1150. You then choose which books to download to your reader.

What about books you've obtained from somewhere else?

There are several ways to get those eBooks onto your EBW1150. They are explained on the eBookwise site here.

Many people use the eBookwise Librarian software explained on that eBookwise link above. But the method I use is to upload my content thru the ETI Personal Content Server.

Using the Personal Content Server, the eBookwise-1150 can display your own personal content in the following file formats: plain text (.txt), rich text format (.rtf), Microsoft Word documents (.doc), HTML (.htm or .html), and Rocket eBook Editions (.rb).

My 2 favorite file formats are the Rocket eBook (.rb) then the HTML (.htm or .html)

When you purchase an eBook from a website other than the three listed above, you will download the eBook to your computer. Then, you will upload those books to the Personal Content Server. (very easy)

Now you connect your eBookwise Reader to the computer as described above, click on "Online Bookshelf" and your personal content will show up there and you can now download it to your reader.Laura Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764499144427502963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-452663198025981163.post-15447060103066946982009-03-14T18:47:00.000-07:002009-09-11T09:30:29.707-07:00Converting eBooks to read on eBookwise ReaderThe eBookwise 1150 is designed to read books in the IMP file format. There is a huge selection of books available in this format from www.eBookwise.com, www.Filamentbooks.com and in the "Multi-format" eBooks at www.Fictionwise.com.

I originally believed that I was limited to purchasing my eBooks from those 3 websites.

If you are like me.... although there are thousands of books to choose from at those sites.....maybe you've been wanting to read some books that are not available from those websites. (This is why I originally thought I'd eventually buy a Sony 505 or an Amazon Kindle.)

Most likely those books are available in the LIT format for the MS Reader as that is (some say) the most popular eBook publishing format. But I can't read that format on my EBW1150.... or so I thought....

When I first started researching how to convert other eBook formats to a format that my eBookwise could read, I got a little confused. There are many methods and software. Some of them are fairly complicated. I just wanted to READ gosh darn it! I didn't want to fiddle around with the darn ebook.

Then I found a couple of FREE tools that will easily convert LIT format eBooks to a format you can read on the EBW1150. Both are very easy- 1 step methods to use.

When you buy an eBook in LIT format (also known as Microsoft Reader) you will download that eBook to your computer. After it is on your computer, you use one of the programs listed below to convert your new eBook. After it is converted, you will upload that new conversion to your Personal Content and then download it to your reader.

It really takes hardly any time at all. For me it takes less than a minute!

These programs are intended for Fair Use Only. This means that you should only use the program to convert eBooks you have already purchased, and you must not distribute copies of the converted version.

My first choice to use is ABC Amber LIT Converter I prefer to convert the LIT to .rb (Rocket Book) and then upload that file to my Personal Content Bookshelf at eBookwise - then download it to my EBW1150.

Sometimes I will get an error when trying to convert a file using the ABC program. When that happens, I'll use Convert LIT 1.8. When I use this program, after "exploding" the book, I'll upload the .html version of the eBook to my Personal Content Bookshelf at eBookwise - then download it to my EBW1150.

The .html version is often called an IE document or Firefox document.. depending on your internet browser.

After discovering these 2 programs, I no longer feel the need to purchase one of the more expensive eBook Readers as I can read almost any title I want to read on my EBW1150.Laura Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764499144427502963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-452663198025981163.post-40843672266586931852009-03-12T08:09:00.000-07:002009-09-11T09:31:12.623-07:00List of eBookstoresWhere do you purchase eBooks? These are entirely legal books - not pirated. They are either out of copyright, public domain or creative commons works. People all over the world love to convert these books into formats that can be read on many different eBook Readers... and they are all volunteers!

Here is where you can find some great free eBooks to read on your EBW1150:

ManyBooks.net : Choose the Rocket Book format or HTML custom format. Either of these formats can be downloaded to your computer and then immediately uploaded to your Personal Content at eBookwise or Filament Books.

Baen Free Library : (Science Fiction) Choose the Rocket Book format or HTML custom format. Continue scanning until you are finished.

Now, it needs some slight adjustments - I prefer to do them in Notepad - so open the document or scan as it may be called in Notepad.

I prefer to separate the paragraphs with more than just the indentation of the next paragraph. To do this:

Click Edit and then Replace

Enter "
"
in the "Find What" field.
Enter "

"

in the "Replace With" field
Click Replace All.

I also found the text size to be a little small to be comfortable. To change this:

Click Edit and then Replace

Enter font-size:10pt in the "Find What" field.
Enter font-size:12pt in the "Replace With" field.
Click Replace All.

Now go up and click on File, then Save As

Enter in the file name you want to save this document as, with .html at the end of the name.

That's it! Now you can upload this html file to your personal content at eBookwise or Filament books and then download it to your eBookwise Reader!Laura Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764499144427502963noreply@blogger.com
